The Frankie Lemmon School and Developmental Center has been providing life-changing education and support for children with special needs starting all the way back to 1965 as the Hudson Memorial Kindergarten for Mentally Retarded Children.

And today, community members, both locally and abroad, have helped make this school what it is today. A safe haven for disabled children to receive the education they so rightfully deserve.

Some of the funds that help the foundation come once a year in the form of a weekend-long wine extravaganza – the Triangle Wine Experience. From free wine tastings, wine dinners with local chefs and winemakers as well as the main Gala, TWE has raised millions of dollars the school. And one of the lesser known, but still highly entertaining events is the annual wine shop tastings.

During this event, local wine shops bring in some heavy hitters in the wine world to pour some wine typically not available in the state. This is your chance to stop by your local wine shop and savor some hefty West Coast wines and hear about them straight from the mouth of the owners or winemakers.

To see the complete schedule, click here.

This year seven local bottle shops will feature roughly 11 winemakers pouring from January 30 to February 2. One of the shops, Falls Village Wine and Beer, will be participating in the event for the first time. “I am very excited to host my first event with the Triangle Wine Experience,” says Jim Soffe, who opened his store this past November. “I have taken part in the event in some way or another for quite a while now – with wine dinners or pouring at the Gala – and have made many good friends doing so,” he says.

For his first time around, Soffe landed Trent Moffet of Oregon’s Moffet Vineyards. Soffe admits that during his time in the restaurant business he has bought and sold Moffet wines many times in the past. “Trent and I have also hit the streets of Raleigh a few times selling his wines, so I’ve gotten to know him (well)” he says.

Taylor Cash, right, of Taylor's Wine Shop in Raleigh at the 2017 TWE Gala.

While Soffe is new to the playing field, at least for this event, Taylor Cash of Taylor’s Wine Shop in Raleigh is a veteran in the game. Cash has been hosting winemakers in his shop for the past 13 years. "We are excited about a lot of the winemakers that come to our shop, as many of them are rock stars of wine making," says Cash. But if he had to pick a favorite, it would have to be Steve Reynolds of Reynolds Family Winery. "His was the first wine dinner I had been to and the first dinner I hosted for Triangle Wine Experience. He has  been to our shop many times since and has been a big supporter of our," he says.

We personally know this, as for the past several years, we've gotten to know more and more about Reynolds as he's always one to chat about his wines and love for Tequila while pouring some of his wines at Taylor's.

Country singer Zac Brown's Uncaged wine pours in Raleigh

When one thinks of quality wine they think in the likes of Robert Foley, Caymus, Silver Oak or Opus One, but what about Dave Matthews, AC/DC, Wayne Gretzky, Jeff Gordon or Francis Ford Coppola? In recent years celebrities have hopped on the wine train and started up their own wineries. Wines that have a "celebrity" name attached to them are always hit or miss, which is why we tend to avoid the misses and steer towards the ones we know are good and can appreciate. But we're also adventurous and enjoy trying new wines and new varietals. So when we saw that BottleMixx in north Raleigh was featuring the wines of Z. Alexander Brown aka Zac Brown, Grammy award-winning country singer, we had to go check it out for ourselves.

We learned a lot that evening about how Z. Alexander Brown wines came about. Zac Brown, we learned, is not new to wines or the restaurant industry. When he decided to delve into the winery business he sought out wineries and winemakers to partner with. His search led him to a collaboration with Napa Valley winemaker, John Killebrew, of Delicato Family Vineyards. Other brands produced by this family-owned winery include Black Stallion, Gnarly Head and Twisted – to name a few.

Zac Brown is involved with every aspect of his wines which includes a Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Proprietary Red Blend – all from California. The label is titled Uncaged and sports an owl on the label signifying the guardian of the vine. These wines are described as "intense, full-bodied and are expressions of the land where they come from."

Uncaged Chardonnay 2016 - Santa Lucia Highlands
Not being big Chardonnay fans we always try with a skeptical nose. This was a Chardonnay we could enjoy with its nice acidity and balance, not too oaky or buttery but with a toasty vanilla undertone.

Uncaged Pinot Noir 2015 - Monterey, Napa, Sonoma
This wine was sourced from multiple growing regions. It was light, fruity, with nice acidity and balance.

Uncaged Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 - North Coast
The Cabernet Sauvignon displayed aromas of black cherry and mocha with a mid-palate of blackberry, black current and a hint of spice. It was a nice Cab and would pair nicely with a meal.

Uncaged Proprietary Red Blend 2013 - North Coast
This was by far our favorite of the tasting. This was a rich, bold and flavorful wine with aromas of blueberry, cassis and cedar with layers of blueberry, black cherry and spices.

As for our first impression of the Z. Alexander Brown Uncaged wines, we thought they were good and solid wines. It was also nice to hear how involved Zac Brown is in his product and not just using his name on the label but to actually take pride in what is being produced. All of these wines retail for around $16.99 a bottle.

In The Kitchen: Carolina Traminette and Spicy Chicken Teriyaki Bowls

Opening a bottle of wine after a long day at work or while enjoying the sunset on the porch is great. But for the most part, that perfect wine is meant to be savored with a splendid meal. And for our In the Kitchen series, we will be pairing a local or regional wine, beer or spirit with a home-cooked meal.

For our first In the Kitchen of the year we decided to pair the 2015 Traminette from Carolina Heritage Winery out of Elkin with some spicy chicken teriyaki bowls, courtesy of delish.com.

We visited this winery for the first time on a cold January weekend, where we learned all about this USDA all organic winery while tasting some wines. We sample a lot of wines that afternoon, but selected the Traminette knowing we were going to pair it with something spicy back home.

The teriyaki marinade for the boneless chicken thighs was sweet, yet tangy – consisting of soy sauce, brown and granulated sugars, grated ginger, garlic and cayenne pepper. Obtaining the characteristics of Gewurztraminer, this wines peppery and floral aromatics didn't cut back the heat in the chicken, but blended with the heat linger on the tongue to be a perfect pairing.

Highest-Ranked North Carolina IPAs, according to Untappd

By Dathan Kazsuk
Twitter: TriangleAT | Facebook: Triangle Around Town | Instagram: trianglearoundtown

Untappd. You either love it or hate it.

I personally don’t care. Sure, I log my beers in the app, but for the most part, I do it to keep track on if I’ve had that beer before. Oh, and I like collecting the badges.

I’ve never used the app to view what other people are rating a beer. Everyone’s tastes are different. You have the ones that everything their tongue touches is nectar of the Gods –  rating anywhere from 4.25 to 5 on the rating scale. Or you have others who don’t like IPAs and drink it anyway, rating that new beer by Trillium as a 2.5 on their rating scale.

I just don’t buy into the hype of “so good” and a 5 bottle cap rating as something I have to hunt down – why, just because Johnny said so, it must be good.

But I decided to have a little fun on this ‘snow day’ to put together a look at what Untappd deems its top rated beers that just so happen to hail from North Carolina. Today I selected its various IPA categories, which it uses a weighted average formula, that rates all beers against each other. Each of its top 50 beers in each category must have 150 ratings or more to qualify.

So where did our NC beers wind up on the top 50 lists? Let’s find out!
